The world’s CO2 champion, the smart fortwo cdi, has now arrived, delivering amazingly low emissions, knockout fuel economy and free road tax.

Producing just 88g/km, the smart fortwo cdi has the lowest C02 emissions of any current production car and is also the most economical production car with combustion drive, delivering a staggering 83.1mpg on the combined fuel economy cycle.

The cdi will be available as a coupe or cabrio, the coupe in either pure or passion trim and the open-top model in the luxurious passion form only.
Enabling the smart fortwo cdi to be so environmentally-compatible is its advanced three-cylinder common-rail diesel engine, which develops a versatile 45hp and provides versatile performance as well as excellent fuel economy.

At the heart of the cdi engine’s quick responses is its extremely compact turbocharger, which despite a compressor wheel of only 33mm in diameter is able to rotate at 280,000rpm and build charge pressure to a maximum of 1,200 millibars. So efficient is the turbocharger that it enables the cdi’s driver to enjoy 85Nm of torque from 1,500rpm, making the cdi ideal for the uncompromising demands of urban driving.

But while the smart cdi is a true diesel when it comes to fuel economy, it’s certainly not when it comes to sounding like one. Sharing fuel injection technology with the cdi engines of its sister brand Mercedes-Benz, the 799cc smart cdi also utilises a two-stage fuel injection process where a small quantity of diesel is sent to ignite in, and pre-heat, the cylinders before the main injection takes place.
